“Good Beginner Violin Outfit, {snip} The bridge needed to be set up and the strings tuned. Not difficult. {snip} The case is very nice, the electronic tuner is terrific, the shoulder rest is very comfortable. {snip} pegs are easy to turn and they do not slip. All in all, for someone like me who is just starting out with the violin, this is a very good package. I highly recommend it. “ . . . read more (Dianne C. Tillman, Amazon).

Mendini 4-4 MV500 , Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Mendini MV500 is given an overall 4.2 rating by 264 users (at the time of writing). The majority of buyers are happy with the instrument, saying that it definitely sounds better than cheaper instruments, and confirm that their violin teachers say that it is good value. Users were happy with the accessories, and the fact that the digital tuner makes tuning the instrument so much easier. Several buyers commented that delivery was quicker than they had expected.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the MV500 is less good than a used violin from a music store. In the view of an experienced professional violinist, this is only true if you are an experienced violin player, because if you are not, you are not going to be able to distinguish a good-value used violin from one which has a higher price tag but is less good than the MV500. Don’t forget that you can also get used violins from Amazon.

One user said that the “ebony” of some of the parts seems to be a description of color rather than the wood, because they seem to be dyed wood or plastic (as is usual for instruments around this price range).

More than one user recommended upgrading the strings to better ones, for better tunning and sound, so you might want to order better quality violin strings at the same time as buying your MV500. A few users also recommend buying better rosin (as this will help with getting the best sound out of the violin). Some users complained about the finish, while others said it is good.

There are also the usual complaints from a few that the violin does not come perfectly setup and tuned, which just shows their ignorance as a violin cannot be shipped setup and tuned, as that might cause damage in shipping (due to variations in temperature during transit). All violins will need setting up and tuning when they arrive. This can be done by a professional, or by an experienced violin player (you could ask violin playing friends to help you), or even by someone with no experience if they do some research and obtain some basic tools (such as needle files for making or adjusting grooves in the bridge when it is fitted). For details on setting-up a violin, see our Violin FAQ’s page.

MV500, in use :

The Mendini 4-4 MV500 Flamed 1-Piece Back Solid Wood Violin is said to be a good beginners instrument, better than most cheaper models, and very suitable for learning the violin (or fiddle).

. . .

Alternatives to the Mendini 4-4 MV500 Flamed 1-Piece Back Solid Wood Violin with Case, Tuner, Shoulder Rest, Bow, Rosin, Bridge and Strings – Full :

The only real alternative to the MV500 is the Kennedy Pupil Violin Outfit 4/4 (Full) Size (see our product-report on that) which is rated at an amazing 4.8 by users, but does cost more than the Mendini. Other than that, the MV500 is the best choice in its price-range.

. . .

Accessories for the Mendini 4-4 MV500:

There aren’t any vital accessories for the MV500 violin kit because it already comes with everything you need, including a digital tuner, but some users recommend upgrading some parts, including violin strings and/or rosin as both help in getting a better sound out of the violin (as well as better strings making tuning easier). Other possible alternatives or upgrades to parts include shoulder rests, bows, and other violin accessories.

For details on violin accessories etc., see our Violin FAQ’s page.

Mendini MV500, user feedback:

Here’s some more user comments from consumer reports by people who’ve used the Mendini 4-4 MV500 in practice . . .

“Impressive instrument! {snip} I am very happy with this purchase! {snip} The violin itself: absolutely gorgeous, with a lovely warm sound that I was not expecting. The wood is very nice; its fine-grained wood gives it that nice tone. It has a beautiful dark finish, and it hasn’t been lacquered to death like so many inferior instruments, which negatively impacts the tone, so it’s nice to see that this violin isn’t like the cheapies in that respect. {snip} rest assured that this violin’s value lies in its exceptionality as an instrument of its class.” . . . read more (Talie, Amazon)

“After her “doctor’s visit,” my new violin gives a rich and sweet voice and looks even lovelier. I may know zilch about violins, but I do know a good sound, and have heard some violins that did not have it. This one does.” . . . read more (Mommy911, Amazon)

“Great starter fiddle, Recieved it very fast, cannot complain about shipping at all. I took the fiddle to my local luthier who gave it a great setup “and new tailpiece” the thing sounds great. I am looking forward to learning to play.” . . . read more (Gabe, Amazon)

“A very nice violin! Purchased it as a beginner and my teacher himself commented that it sounded really good and the construction was good! He thought that it cost a lot more than the actual price. Very happy with it and plan to purchase another one from the same company.
Thanks. “

“Great purchase, First of all the voilin arrived one day before than expected and in excellent condition. My Violin Teacher only had to tune it a little and it was ready to go. Of course it got out of tune a little but my teacher said that this is expected from a new Violin. He was very satisfied with the sound and definetly recommends it for the begginer and has a very atractive price. Overall I’d rate it Ten out of five! “ . . . read more (Tomas, Amazon)

“Great beginner’s violin” . . . read more (C. Morris, Amazon)

“very good, {snip} The pegs work well and do not slip. I was sure to push them in when tuning. From my minimum experience with Violins and comparing this one to others I think this instrument sounds good overall when I listen to others playing it. “ . . . read more (mitch, Amazon).
